Kickball Rules

League Philosophy
• Competitive for all skill levels
• Play hard, have fun
• Respect players and referees
• Music encouraged on sidelines

 

Teams & Format
• 10 Players on the field, max of 6 males
• Minimum players to start the game: 6 players with a minimum of 2 females or non-binary
• Max of 2 subs who are registered players in the league
• All kickers must play minimum of 1 inning of defense

• Max of 16 players per roster

 

Game Structure
• 9 innings or 60 minutes. No new innings after 50mins.
• Mercy rule: 10+ run lead after 5 innings
• 5 run cap per inning (last inning unlimited)

 

Pitching
• Must be pitched by hand
• Must bounce twice before home plate

 

Strike Zone and Pitch Count
• Strike zone is 1ft on either side of home plate and 1ft in height.
• 3 Strikes is an out – Strikes and Fouls are counted separately
• 3 Fouls is an out – Strikes and Fouls are counted separately
• 4 consecutive Balls is a walk to 2nd base. 4 Balls w/ either a Strike or Foul is a walk to 1st 

 

Fielding
• All fielders must stay behind 1st–3rd line until ball is kicked or crosses home plate
• Catcher must stay behind kicker until ball is kicked
• Play is dead when the pitcher has the ball within 5ft of pitcher’s mound. If a runner is
advancing at the time the pitcher receives the ball, they are allowed to continue to the base.

 

Kicking
• Male must kick ball beyond 1st–3rd line, if ball is stopped before crossing the line it is ruled a foul.

• Female, or non-binary, bunting allowed

• All players must kick

• There are no gender rules for kicking order 

 

Running
• No leading off or stealing
• Must tag up on fly balls
• Safety base at 1st and Home
• Commit line at home

 

Safety
• No sliding into 1st or home
• Head/neck contact = runner SAFE

Policies

Refund Policy: 

  • Refunds will only be available if there is a change in venue or change in start date of the league. Refunds will not be available due to weather or changes in your personal schedule. 
  • In the event that a league or tournament is cancelled, you will be notified at least 48 hours in advance and receive a full refund.

Weather Policy:

  • Up to two rainout games are guaranteed. If a week is unable to be completed due to weather, the games will be rescheduled for the end of the season and playoffs will be pushed back one week OR doubleheaders will be scheduled if time/space at the venue permits. After two rainouts, games will not be made up. 

Code of Conduct:

  • The San Diego Kickball is committed to providing a fun, safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for all participants. This Code of Conduct applies to all players, team captains, spectators, staff, volunteers, and participants at San Diego Kickball leagues, tournaments, and events. By participating in any San Diego Kickball activity, individuals agree to demonstrate good sportsmanship and treat teammates, opponents, officials, staff, and spectators with respect at all times, compete fairly, and follow the rules of the game. Participants must accept referee and organizer decisions respectfully and help maintain a positive and supportive environment for all players. Harassment, bullying, discrimination based on race, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, nationality, disability, or age, and any threatening, abusive, or aggressive behavior are strictly prohibited. If alcohol is present at events, participants must comply with all local laws and park regulations in San Diego, avoid excessive intoxication or disruptive behavior, and refrain from illegal drug use. Participants are expected to prioritize safety by avoiding reckless or dangerous play, following instructions from league staff and referees, respecting park facilities and surrounding neighborhoods, and properly disposing of trash and belongings. Physical altercations, threats of violence, or attempts to intimidate others will not be tolerated and may result in immediate removal from the event. Participants must comply with all directions from league officials and staff and may not interfere with the administration of games or events. Violations of this Code of Conduct may result in disciplinary actions including warnings, game ejection, suspension from games or events, removal from a league or tournament, or permanent ban from San Diego Kickball activities. By registering for or participating in San Diego Kickball leagues or tournaments, participants acknowledge that they have read, understand, and agree to abide by this Code of Conduct, and failure to comply may result in removal from events without refund.

Liability Waiver:

  • I, the participant listed above, acknowledge that participation in kickball leagues and/or tournaments (“Activities”) involves inherent risks, including but not limited to physical injury, accidents, or property damage. I voluntarily assume all such risks associated with participation. I certify that I am in good health and physically capable of participating in these Activities. I understand that it is my responsibility to follow all rules and guidelines set forth by the organizers. In consideration for being allowed to participate in the Activities, I hereby release, waive, and hold harmless [San Diego Kickball], its owners, officers, employees, volunteers, sponsors, and agents (“Released Parties”) from any and all claims, liabilities, demands, actions, or causes of action, whether known or unknown, arising out of or relating to my participation in the Activities, including claims for personal injury, property damage, or wrongful death. I also consent to receive medical treatment deemed necessary in the event of injury, accident, or illness during my participation. I understand that I am solely responsible for all medical expenses incurred. I grant permission to the Released Parties to photograph and/or record my participation and use such media for promotional purposes without compensation. Acknowledgment of Understanding I have read this waiver, fully understand its terms, and sign it voluntarily. I understand that by signing this document, I am giving up certain legal rights.
